This vessel belongs to a collection of sculptural vessels designed and finished in 2020. The vessels were designed to carry some of the cremains of the departed and embody a spirit-like essence by their form. The combination of woods, their textures and characteristics reveal the hidden beauty of the material and we are hopeful that they will be a fitting tribute to the life lived.
Process: The main body of each vessel comes from fallen branches or trees from Wicklow, the so-called Garden of Ireland. Turned and hollowed they are set aside for a year and then returned to the lathe for further shaping and hollowing. Various woods are fitted and shaped to create the final form with small pieces of exotic wood and brass to accentuate the vessel. Finishing and polishing happen over a two week period where they are sanded, textured and French polished. Each vessel is mounted to a hand-sculpted pedestal and suspended with brass fitting
