Setantá Celtic Urn

Design Influence

Setantá or otherwise know as Cúchulainn was a Celtic defender of his people. Loyal to his friends and family with a strong sense of duty.Born Setantá, he gained his new name of Cúchulainn after slaying Culann's fierce guard dog in self-defense and took its place until a replacement could be rared and training. a mighty warrior whose fame spread across the world. This Elegantly sculpted Urn for Ashes ( in the base) is hand-carved on all sides from a 50-year-old Ash tree that Seamus has dried for 5 years in his workshop. The wood has been lightly scorched after carving to harden the surface and allow the polished finish to reflect the detail of the creation. The central panel has been further enhanced by the addition of a melted glass 'water' panel which can be set or can swivel.

Color

The color of the Setantá Celtic Urn is enhanced by oiling multiple times to really bring out the natural grain and depth of color and some elements of his work allow him to use a scorched timber or bleached wood to further enhance his creations. Our artisan carefully selects and drys his own wood as Seamus insists on taking responsibility for the quality of each piece from tree to its final home.

Like the potter's wheel, the wood lathe is a simple mechanism which can generate a variety of forms. The operator is known as a turner, and the skills needed to use the tools were traditionally known as turnery. In pre-industrial England, these skills were sufficiently difficult to be known as 'the misterie' of the turners guild. The skills to use the tools by hand, without a fixed point of contact with the wood, distinguish woodturning and the wood lathe from the machinists lathe, or metal-working lathe.
