Walnut Keepsake with Irish Bog Oak Finial and Trispiral Engraving ( Commission piece)

Design Influence

This hand made keepsake has been made individually by a national award-winning Artisan and master craftsman, Seamus Cassidy. Each keepsake created is unique as the individual hand working and the different wood grain means it is impossible to have two exactly the same. The body of the Keepsake Urn is made from Walnut and turned on a lathe so precisely it is a treat to hold. The lid is made from Crosscut Ash and bleached white and is then carefully finished with a 3-5,000-year-old Kells Bog Oak finial taken from Seamus's family farm in Kells Co. Meath when the bogland was drained many, many years ago and not far from the land the book of Kells was found. A true work of art, a Walnut cremation Urn for ashes, turned with a level of care and detail rarely found. This is a Keepsake cremation Urn that will always be with the family throughout the generations to come and can be used to hold a small amount of ashes or sentimental keepsake items. Seamus creates bespoke keepsakes Urns and full-size urns using his decades of experience and mastery of wood. His Urns highlight the beauty of each piece of wood and the fine workmanship can be seen in the texture of each object taking hours of craftsmanship. Seamus has made a very small number of these Urns should a family want a set.

Walnut Keepsake Urn Color

The color of each piece is enhanced by oiling multiple times to really bring out the natural grain and depth of color and some elements of his work allow him to use a scorched timer or bleached wood to further enhance his creations.

Delivery and Presentation

The Walnut Keepsake with Bog oak Finial will be delivered safely in its own wooden presentation box and each piece is personally signed by Seamus.

So what is woodturning ...Woodturning is the craft of using the wood lathe with hand-held tools to cut a shape that is symmetrical around the axis of rotation. Like the potter's wheel, the wood lathe is a simple mechanism which can generate a variety of forms. The operator is known as a turner, and the skills needed to use the tools were traditionally known as turnery. In pre-industrial England, these skills were sufficiently difficult to be known as 'the misterie' of the turners guild. The skills to use the tools by hand, without a fixed point of contact with the wood, distinguish woodturning and the wood lathe from the machinists lathe, or metal-working lathe.
