Ash Burial, Ash Scattering & Memorial Trees FAQs

Where can I scatter ashes in Ireland?

Ash scattering may be possible in a variety of settings, subject to the landowner’s permission and applicable requirements.
At Dunsany Estate, we offer a privately arranged woodland ash scattering experience within the Pond Wood. Families can gather, share memories, say a few words or simply spend time together in quiet reflection.
Our woodland scattering experience starts at €900 plus VAT.

Can I bury cremated ashes beneath a tree in Ireland?

At Dunsany Estate, we offer arrangements for the burial of cremated remains beneath a dedicated Family Monument Tree.
Families can select an established tree within the woodland, creating an individually identified place of remembrance. A personalised granite memorial marker is placed at ground level.

What is a Family Monument Tree?

A Family Monument Tree is an established tree selected as a dedicated place for remembrance and ash burial.
Families are invited to visit Dunsany, experience the woodland and choose a tree that feels right for them.
The experience includes the planting of 100 additional native trees in memory of their loved one, contributing to the wider restoration of nature at Dunsany with our sister Compnay Irish Trees.
The price is €4,500 plus VAT.

What is the difference between ash scattering and ash burial?

Ash scattering involves dispersing cremated remains in a chosen location, whereas ash burial involves placing the remains at an identifiable resting place.
Dunsany offers both experiences, allowing families to choose the form of farewell and remembrance that best reflects their wishes.

Can our family attend the ceremony?

Yes. Family participation is an important part of our memorial experiences.
Families may wish to include readings, prayers, poetry or personal memories. Others prefer a simple and quiet occasion.
We discuss the arrangements in advance so that the occasion can be personal and meaningful.

Can we visit before deciding?

Yes. We encourage families considering a Family Monument Tree to arrange a visit to the estate.
This allows them to experience the setting, see available trees and discuss the arrangements without any obligation to proceed.
Visits are by prior appointment.

Can we return to visit our loved one’s tree?

Return visits ( eg Anniversary) can be arranged, subject to the estate’s access arrangements.
The tree’s location is recorded (by geotag) so that it can be identified on future visits. We explain the visiting arrangements to families before they proceed.

Can more than one family member’s ashes be buried at the same tree?

Families interested in establishing a shared resting place for more than one loved one are welcome to discuss their wishes with us.
We can explain what arrangements may be possible and any additional charges for future interments.

Is a memorial tree the same as an ash burial tree?

No. Our traditional memorial trees are living tributes planted in memory of loved ones.
Ashes cannot be buried or scattered at those trees.
The Dunsany Monument Tree experiences are separate arrangements specifically intended for cremated remains.

Is ash burial the same as natural burial?

No. Natural or woodland burial often refers to full-body burial within an appropriately designated burial ground.
Our Dunsany experiences relate to cremated remains, not full-body burial.

Can we arrange a memorial beneath an ancient oak?

Our Castle Legacy Oak experience offers a premium remembrance setting associated with an established oak within the historic grounds of Dunsany Castle.
The experience is priced at €8,500, with full details confirmed on enquiry.

Can we plant a new tree as part of the experience?

Our New Life Memorial Tree experience includes the planting of a semi-mature tree as a living tribute, together with the dedication of 100 additional native trees within the estate’s nature restoration programme with our sister Company Irish Trees.
The experience starts at €2,850 plus VAT.

Why choose Dunsany Estate?

Dunsany is a historic private estate in County Meath, known for its ancient woodland, mature trees and ambitious rewilding project.
It is a landscape where habitats are being restored and protected, creating space for wildlife and biodiversity to flourish, Ireland’s largest private Rewilding project.
For families, this offers a distinctive connection between remembrance, nature and the passing of generations.

How do we arrange an ash burial or scattering at Dunsany?

The first step is simply to get in touch.
We can discuss your wishes, explain the experiences, answer questions and arrange a visit where appropriate.
There is no obligation to make a decision immediately.
